The Five Graces

When you walk into Overflow, you are not just another face in the crowd. You are part of a body.

We believe that when Jesus rose and ascended, He gave gifts to His church. The Bible puts it simply: “to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it” (Ephesians 4:7). Not to a few. To each one. That includes you.

A few verses later, Paul names five of those gifts: apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers. We call them the five graces. They are given, in Paul’s words, “to equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up” until we all grow into maturity and unity (Ephesians 4:11–13).

Here is the part many people have never been told: those five are not job titles for the people on stage. They are graces woven into the whole family. Every one of us carries a measure of all five, with some that feel natural and life-giving and others we are still growing into. A healthy church is one where all five are alive and working together.

That is why we are built the way we are.

No one carries all five at full strength, and that is the point. We need each other. The builder needs the shepherd so that people are not run over by the mission. The shepherd needs the builder so that comfort never quietly replaces calling. When all five are present and honored, the body grows up healthy.

Five graces, side by side. This is the part that shapes everything about how we are built. The five graces are not a ladder. One does not sit above another, and there is no order of importance among them. They stand side by side, equal in weight and equal in honor, interconnected like parts of one body. Many churches end up strong in one or two of these and quiet in the others, often without meaning to. We have chosen to raise up all five and give each the same honor. The reason is simple: because every believer carries these graces in some measure, prizing one above the others would quietly tell the people whose grace is in another area that they matter less. We refuse to do that. Every grace is honored here, so that every person is.

This is not a personality test or a label to wear. It is an invitation.

If you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, God has already placed grace in you. Part of belonging here is discovering what that is, growing in it, and using it to serve the people around you. You are not meant to sit on the sidelines while a few professionals do the ministry. The Bible’s vision is the opposite: leaders exist to equip you, and then you minister. That is how the whole body is built up “in love” (Ephesians 4:16).

So as you get connected at Overflow, we will help you discover your grace and take a next step into it. That might be a serve team, a missional community, or simply a conversation. Wherever you are, there is a place for you here, because the family is not complete without you.

We hold the five graces with conviction and with humility.

We believe these graces are a faithful and fruitful lens for understanding how God builds His church, and we have chosen to organize our ministries around them. We also hold this gently. Ephesians 4 is one of several places the Bible describes the gifts God gives, and we do not claim it is the only way to picture the church.

You may have heard these five called offices, or the fivefold ministry. We use the word graces on purpose, and we want to be clear about what they are not. They are not ranks. They are not a chain of command, and no one at Overflow holds spiritual authority over you because of a gift. The graces are given for service and for building each other up, never for control. Spiritual leadership and oversight at Overflow rest with our elders and our stated leadership, exactly as Scripture directs. The five graces describe how God has gifted the whole family to serve, not a structure of power.

That is the heart of it. Five graces, one body, every member essential.
